UPDATE: Wascher Elementary Traffic Update: Addressing Safety Concerns and Finding Solutions

Signs are being prepped and will be here in time to roll out the first day back from winter break, January 6th.

We understand the frustration many residents and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office have shared regarding traffic congestion around Wascher Elementary, particularly during student drop-off and pick-up. Some have reported being stuck in traffic for up to 35 minutes on 7th St. Ext., significantly impacting their commute.  This gridlock creates a safety hazard for everyone – students, drivers, and pedestrians alike. In addition to the traffic, there are concerns about emergency response for the fire department and residents having access to their properties in this time.

While a perfect solution may not exist, we're committed to taking action. The City of Lafayette, in collaboration with the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office and Wascher Elementary, will be implementing a trial traffic mitigation plan to improve traffic flow and enhance safety around the school.

Here's what you need to know:

  • NO LEFT TURN signs: To ease congestion, we'll be installing three NO LEFT TURN signs on 7th St. Ext. (see photo) during peak drop-off and pick-up times. This is a critical first step, and its effectiveness will be evaluated after a 30-day trial period following installation.
  • Trial Period Start Date: We anticipate having the signs installed before the first day back after winter break. However, this date isn't guaranteed. Please follow our official Facebook page or download the City App "Our Lafayette" for the most up-to-date information.
  • Peak Hours: During the trial, NO LEFT TURN restrictions will be in effect from 7a-10a and 2p-4p on 7th St. Ext. between Jackson and Grant (except for buses).
  • Alternate Routes: To navigate around Wascher during these peak hours, we encourage you to use Duniway Rd., 7th St./Lincoln, or Grant St. as alternative routes.

Your Voice Matters: How You Can Be Involved
